A Guide on renovating Your Attic Into A Bedroom

At the top of a building or a house is the space that is called the attic. Usually, people use this space to store things, but that's a waste, since there are so many things that can be done with that extra space. One good example that we're going to talk about in this article is turning the attic into a bedroom and some basic rules that you should follow.

The Inspection

When you're doing major renovations to a building, you will need a permit to do the modifications. If you want to do this project for an extra bedroom, you should respect the regulations so your work holds under the scrutiny of an inspector.

Go to a building inspector and ask him to measure the attic space so you know if you can get a permit on the work that you're about to do. You should make sure that you have plenty of space for safety measures and for any ventilation that the room will need. Also check to see if you have plenty of headroom in that area.

Check for any type of damage, even if they're small. Look at the walls and see if it has any cracks in it. Make sure that the system of support is sturdy enough. Take out the pipes that are rusty.

When you're looking to renovate an attic, make sure the rooms below it are OK as well. You need to make sure that the structure's strength isn't affected by the renovations. Repair whatever is needed, so you don't have problems down the road. Talk with professionals and ask if what you intend to do is possible. Learn everything there is to know about the safety features that might come into play, as you don't want your house or foundation to be affected in any way.

The Planning Part

After you've done all this and everything is in order, create the renovation plans based on which you will be working on.

Even though it's only a blueprint, you will be able to realize what can be done and what can't. It might be a good idea to check out magazine and books specialized on home decorations at this point, to give you a few ideas on what you can do. You can also check out some online sites for the same purpose.

The Execution Of The Plan

If your attic is big enough, you can even consider making more than one bedroom in that space. The attic's shape plays an important role here and the design should make sure that each room occupies the optimal amount of space.

When you make the bedrooms (or bedroom), make sure they have plenty of windows to realize the ventilation of the rooms and to bring the light inside. Make everything safe, so that children can stay there if needed.

If you want to make the rooms brighter, the paint that you're going to choose will be important. If you choose right, the room can even seem bigger than in reality.

After the rooms are done, choose what types of electronics will go there. Whatever you choose to put in there, it should be based on the needs of the person living there.

If you plan everything right from the beginning, turning an attic into a bedroom should be easy. One thing you should pay attention to is the budget with which you're working on.
